Winning members of the South Middle School Science Olympiad team from Arlington Heights, Illinois, demonstrate their Robo-Cross device at the Science Chicago kick-off press announcement in Millennium Park on July 29, 2008.
From September 2008 to August 2009, Science Olympiad will join more than 100 of Chicago's leading academic, scientific, corporate and non-profit institutions to host programs designed to awaken the inner scientist in everyone. The centerpiece of Science Olympiad's involvement with Science Chicago will be the Urban Schools Initiative, a project in its second year that provides 17 Chicago Public Schools with Science Olympiad team memberships, materials and specialized training for CPS coaches and students. Science Olympiad also participated in Science Chicago's kick-off event in Millennium Park, where Science Olympiad participants from South Middle School, Kennedy Junior High School, New Trier High School and BEST High School showed off their skills in Trajectory, Sounds of Music, Wright Stuff, Robo-Cross and Electric Vehicle. In February 2009, Science Chicago sponsored the first-ever Urban Schools Initiative "Build It Learn It Day" at the Museum of Science and Industry for more than 230 Chicago Public Schools students and teachers.
